The recent election is an excellent example of conservatives agreeing to live by the outcome of a properly run election and liberals refusing to. When I say, “rules don’t apply to liberals,” I could say that “liberals refuse to live by society’s rules.”

The Local Evidence
Proposition 8 was out on the ballot according to the rules. Even Attorney General Jerry Brown monkeyed with the proposition’s official title before the measure made it to the ballot, attempting to obfuscate the intent. However, Proposition 8 supporters made sure that the voting public was perfectly clear on the meaning – that marriage is only between a man and a woman – and campaigned diligently until voters passed it resoundingly. However, that democratic voting process is being threatened because the liberal opposition does not like the outcome.
Locally, Scott Eckern, artistic director for the California Musical Theatre, resigned amid outrageous pressure from the loathsome No on Prop. 8 crowd when it was exposed that he donated to the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign. He chose to participate in the democratic process on an issue he felt strongly about and was forced to resign by screaming leftists—all out of concern for his theatre.
Some would say that’s the risk we take when we speak out; however, Eckern did not speak out publicly—he wrote a private check. What’s next? Will all of his votes be leaked to the media? Who is next on the firing line?
A National Example
In Minnesota, Republican U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman is in the fight of his professional life right now as a liberal Democrat refuses to acknowledge the rules. At the end of Election Day, Coleman was ahead by approximately 725 votes against challenger Al Franken; that lead is now down to only 206. Suddenly, with a recount looming, hundreds of additional ballots appeared out of nowhere, all cast for Al Franken. County officials suddenly “found ballots” in their cars, claimed they made typographical errors or said they didn’t count correctly. If this is true, they all should be fired.
It appears that Franken will steal this election just as Gov. Christine Gregoire managed a “come-from-behind” victory in the 2004 Washington state gubernatorial race—that election, too, involved sketchy ballots and “errors” on the part of poll workers. It worked so well in Washington, Al Franken’s campaign decided to try it.
The Right’s Fight
Members of the liberal left only play by the rules (the Constitution) when it serves their purposes. Most specifically, they espouse their love of the First Amendment, mainly free speech. But now, they have violated the rights of other citizens who only wanted to participate in the democratic process.
Until conservatives fight back, they have nothing about which to grumble. But it’s going to take all of us. On my Sacramento Union blog, “Keeping Them Honest,” I am compiling a list of retorts to current liberal phrases, lies and ridiculous political positions. Share your own responses. Speak out, please, while it is still your constitutional right.
